A quartet of feather-weight, pea-size parathyroid glands play an outsized role in your health. For starters, they regulate calcium, which helps ensure that blood clots properly and allows nerves and muscles to function normally. Your parathyroid glands also regulate phosphorous and vitamin D, which work with calcium to keep bones strong.
Usually, these glands go about their jobs with little fanfare –– except when certain conditions or diseases interfere.
