Like her jewelry, French designer Aurélie Bidermann’s new boutique is a glamorous mash-up of locales and eras. For her first shop in the U.S., Bidermann chose a spot in the heart of Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, envisioning a space that evoked 1960s and ’70s California and New York City, as well as her Paris flagship.
David Mann from New York’s MR Architect + Decor and Parisian firm Atelier Franck Durand teamed up to execute her vision, a design that’s at once restrained and exuberant. The 700-square-foot shop is bathed in white, but a mix of materials—stucco, silk, lacquer, and travertine—counter any starkness.
A seating area at the center of the store conjures a breezy West Coast living room, with shelves of travel and cocktail table books, and accents in turquoise, yellow, coral, and orange. Simple glass cases and blond-wood platforms display Bidermann’s pieces, which straddle the line between bohemian and luxe. (One of her best-known designs is a gilded version of the friendship bracelet.)
For the shop’s façade, Bidermann commissioned a piece by Madrid-based muralist Remed. His bold mural is both a nod to SoHo’s artistic past and a declaration that this is no conventional jewelry boutique.
