Watch: Oscar-Nominated Stunning 'The Flying Sailor' Animated Short

The Flying Sailor

And away he goes... This mesmerizing animated short initially premiered in 2022 and is available online to watch thanks to The New Yorker. The Flying Sailor is the creation of a Canadian animation team known as "Tilby/Forbis". The short is directly inspired by the 1917 Halifax Explosion, particularly the account of a sailor who was blown away and found unharmed, but completely naked. It ended up nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the Oscars in 2023. In 1917, two ships collided in the Halifax Harbour, causing the largest accidental explosion in history. Among the tragic stories of the disaster is the remarkable account of a sailor who, blown skyward from the docks, flew 2KM before landing uphill, naked & unharmed. The Flying Sailor is a contemplation of his journey. Drawing on reports of traumatic shock & near-death experiences, animators Wendy Tilby & Amanda Forbis consider the kind of cataclysmic moment that pulls us from our path, strips us bare & utterly shifts our perspective. It is "an exhilarating meditation on a few seconds of a life, and a celebration of the wonder and fragility of being." Impossible to ever forget this film after viewing.

Firebrand Trailer

"Do you believe in Hell? I think we're both bound for it." Roadside Attractions has revealed the first official trailer for Firebrand, the latest from Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year, which is why they're debuting the trailer now just before Cannes 2024 kicks off soon. This true story is about Queen Katherine Parr & Henry VIII's marriage. Adapted from the novel "Queen's Gambit" by Elizabeth Fremantle. Alicia Vikander stars as Katherine Parr, Jude Law as Henry VIII, plus Eddie Marsan, Amr Waked, Sam Riley, Ruby Bentall, Bryony Hannah, and Erin Doherty. This one got pretty bad reviews out of Cannes last year, it is not worth sitting through unless you're really into this kidn of history.

This originally premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, a full six months before Lily Gladstone's Killers of the Flower Moon premiered in Cannes. Official US Trailer for 'Handling the Undead' Starring Renate Reinsve

Handling the Undead Trailer

"He needs to go to a hospital." "No. Then we'll lose him again." Neon has debuted the second official trailer for the indie horror thriller from Norway titled Handling the Undead, from Norwegian filmmaker Thea Hvistendahl. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to mostly mixed & negative reviews. This dramatic horror-thriller film takes place on a hot summer day in Oslo, Norway. The newly dead mysteriously awaken, and three families are thrown into chaos when their deceased loved ones come back to them. Who are they, and what do they want? What does this resurrection mean and are their loved ones back? I'm guessing no... Adapted from the novel by the same writer who wrote the Let the Right One In book. Starring Renate Reinsve (from The Worst Person in the World), Bjørn Sundquist, Bente Børsum, Anders Danielsen Lie, Bahar Pars, and Inesa Dauksta. "A story about grief and loss, but also about hope and understanding of what we can't comprehend or control." This does look extra bleak and dark, with all the undead messing up the lives of the living. Not for everyone, but some will be very into this.

Epic Second Trailer Lands for 'Twisters' Sequel Featuring Glen Powell

Twisters Trailer #2

"We've never seen tornadoes like this before. And we need your help." Buckle up, cowboys!! Time for a wild ride. Universal Pictures has debuted the second official trailer for Twisters, arriving in theaters in July this summer. Yep, after a 28 year wait, they've finally, finally made a sequel to the awesome natural disaster movie summer hit Twister from 1996. It's made by the director of Minari previously. This summer, the epic studio disaster movie returns with an adrenaline-pumping, seat-gripping, big-screen thrill ride that puts audiences right in direct contact with one of nature’s most wondrous—and destructive—forces. Twisters has an exciting new cast, lead by Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell as a reckless tornado tour guide operator, and Anthony Ramos, along with Nope's Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Kiernan Shipka, Nik Dodani, and Maura Tierney. The plot again seems to be – what if some people get way too obsessed with chasing tornadoes and it gets dangerous. As usual, right? They're really upping the ante with all the "never seen anything like this" - fireworks, "twins", fire tornadoes, and more. This is a must watch.

Festival Trailer for Payal Kapadia's Beautiful 'All We Imagine As Light'

All We Imagine As Light Trailer

"I'm sending you kisses through the clouds." The first festival promo trailer has debuted for a film titled All We Imagine As Light, made by a young Indian filmmaker named Payal Kapadia. It will be premiering at the prestigious 2024 Cannes Film Festival this month as the first Indian film in Main Competition since 1994 and one of just four female-directed features in the section this year. It's one of my most anticipated! The Mumbai-set story follows two nurses & roommates who head off on trip to a beach town to find a space where their desires can manifest. The cast features Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon. Prabha's routine is disrupted when she receives an odd gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a spot in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. They escape to a coastal town which leads them to break free from the constraints that have defined their entire existence thus far. Yep this looks really beautiful! There's a few really lovely moments that stand out in here.

Full Trailer for 'Hotel Cocaine' Series Feat. Danny Pino & Yul Vazquez

Hotel Cocaine Trailer

"What's happening to this city?" MGM+ has revealed the official trailer for a series titled Hotel Cocaine, which will be streaming in June this summer on MGM+. Made by MGM and Epix, this crime series tells the story of Roman Compte, a Cuban exile and general manager of The Mutiny Hotel, the glamorous epicenter of the Miami cocaine scene in the '70s. Compte was a Cuban exile, CIA operative, and the general manager of the Hotel Mutiny – known as "Casablanca on cocaine." Businessmen, politicians, international narcos, CIA and FBI agents, models, sports stars, and musicians all frequented the hotel and its glitzy nightclub and restaurant. At the center of it all was Compte, who did his best to keep it going & fulfill his own American dream. Starring Danny Pino (best known from "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Mayans M.C") as Compete, with Yul Vazquez as Nestor Cabal, Mark Feuerstein, Michael Chiklis, Mayra Hermosillo, Jonathan Lev, and Corina Bradley. This looks like it has some levity, though it seems to be mostly an emotional series on how crazy Miami's drug scene was in the 70s/80s. Similar but not the same as Scarface.

Another Loud Trailer for Harmony Korine's Infrared Film 'Aggro Dr1ft'

Aggro Dr1ft Trailer #2

"No mercy!" EDGLRD has debuted another extra trailer for Harmony Korine's loud and obnoxious Aggro Dr1ft. This film is actually getting a quick theatrical release mainly at various Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas (and a few others), even though I hope no one wastes their time on this. Korine's experimental, video game-inspired Aggro Dr1ft hitman film first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last fall and I hated it - my full review. In this "sensual experimental elegy" by Harmony Korine, spellbinding infrared photography evokes a dreamlike portrait of a tormented assassin. It's shot in and presented entirely as infrared footage, with annoying, blaring sound and music that will make you want to drive right off a cliff... Starring Jordi Mollà and Travis Scott and some other random people you can't even make out on screen. It's so terrible it even features A.I. visuals making half the scenes worse. I can only recommend not wasting money on this.

Official Trailer for Beloved Racehorse Doc Film 'A Horse Named Winx'

A Horse Named Winx Trailer

"She had the will to win, but she also had the will to live." Transmission Films has revealed the first trailer for A Horse Named Winx, a documentary film about the famous racehorse from Australia. Winx's final race in April 2019 was watched by millions worldwide. From the wilful foal who was hard to catch, to a plain leggy teenager who kept to herself & turned her back on affection, Winx became a front page phenomenon, and in the process thrust her trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman onto the world stage. But away from the cameras, coping with the enormous pressure of maintaining the winning streak was testing Team Winx to the limit. A Horse Named Winx goes behind the sports headlines and spectacular victories to reveal the unforgettable spirit of a champion, who away from the racetrack faced her biggest battle and once again refused to be beaten. Written & narrated by journalist Andrew Rule and directed by Janine Hosking. "I only now feel like I am ready to tell the story of what we went through," reveals trainer Chris Waller. This story looks like it will be emotional and heart-wrenching, not just a joyful recap of all her wins and the glory days.
